The Surprising Tactic DJs are Using to Improve
Hey there Soundscapers,
You might think the only way to level up your DJ skills is by holing up in your bedroom, watching endless YouTube tutorials, and buying more tracks than a railway company.
But here's a little secret: the BEST way to improve your skills is by playing in front of real people.
I know what you're thinking: "But I don't have any gigs!" "I don't have an audience!" "Does my mum count?" Don't worry, in 2023 it's easier than ever to find a crowd to play for.
When the pandemic hit and clubs shut down, livestreaming became a lifeline for DJs to keep playing and connecting with their fans. I myself streamed regularly and played to thousands of people over that time.
Livestreaming was once thought to be a game-changer for DJs looking to make a career out of their passion. And even though my optimism has cooled a bit since then, there are still plenty of good reasons to take livestreaming seriously.
Embrace Mistakes: Why Livestreaming Your DJ Practice Matters
So, I've been trying to learn how to scratch. I'm not exactly DJ QBert yet, but I thought it was time to take my skills out of the bedroom and into the wild.
This past weekend, I went live on Twitch to put my scratching to the test. Let's just say, 75% of it was pretty damn awful.
But that's the beauty of going live – I couldn't just rely on my usual scratch drills. I had to improvise and get creative. One of my listeners even sent in a recording of themselves for me to scratch live on air!
Here’s a few reasons why you should practice learning in public.
Let the Nerves Flow
Practicing in front of an audience can be nerve-wracking, but nerves are a natural part of performing. Facing your fears can help you get comfortable with the uncomfortable and build confidence as a DJ.
Learn to Adapt
Live audiences can be unpredictable, and learning to adapt to different crowds can help you become a better DJ. Whether it's reading the (chat)room, adjusting your set, or interacting with the listeners, being able to think on your feet is a valuable skill for any DJ.
Get Social
DJing live can be a great way to connect with your fans and build your social media presence. By livestreaming your practice sessions, you can engage with your audience and create a sense of community around your music.
Break the Routine
Practicing in the same place every time can get boring. By moving your practice online, you can break out of your routine and add some excitement to your practice sessions. Plus, it's a great way to get out of your comfort zone and try something new.
Have Some Fun
At the end of the day, DJing should be fun! Practicing in front of an audience can be a great way to let loose, have fun, and enjoy the music. Whether you're performing to a small or large virtual audience, sharing music with others is one of the greatest parts about this knob twiddling we love so much.
